Projection: need to automatically qualify

Tarleton State’s profile forces a simple conclusion: without a signature road or neutral victory to offset several heavy nonconference setbacks at SMU, LSU, Baylor and Cincinnati, the only realistic path to the NCAA tournament is winning the Western Athletic title. The few bright spots — a road win at Rice, a true road victory at Southern Utah and home successes over Cal Baptist and Abilene Christian — come against modest opposition and are undermined by offensive inconsistency that turned winnable conference trips into losses at UT Arlington, Utah Valley and Cal Baptist and by a neutral-site defeat to Abilene Christian that capped a late skid. The defense has kept games competitive at times but cannot erase the damage of those lopsided losses, so unless the team secures the conference automatic bid its résumé lacks the quality wins and road/neutral résumé the committee prizes.
